Makar sankranti festival is celebrated every year on 14 Jan. It is one of the most propitious occasions celebrated in almost all parts of the country bringing favorable fortuity and good luck to all. The festival is celebrated in several names, variety of traditions are witnessed on this festival in different states. The Sun transits from Sagittarius zodiac to Capricorn during the winter solstice is known as Makar Sankranti. This journey of Sun traveling northwards (from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana) is very sacred and auspicious. Taking sacred dip in the Holy River, praying the deity, fasting and giving daan or charity are considered extremely holy deeds on "Sankranti". Makar Sankranti is also known as "Khichadi" (named on a dish made from rice and lentils).This very dish i.e. khichadi gives relief from many 'graha doshas' if eaten on Makar Sankranti.
